30 Mar 2009 Dilafruz Williams participates in White House roundtable discussion
Dilafruz Williams, Education faculty and Portland School Board co-chair, participated in a White House meeting with urban school leaders. The Council of the Great City Schools, a coalition of the nation's largest urban public school systems, led some 30 urban school superintendents and board members to a roundtable discussion with Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Obama administration officials in Washington, D.C., March 16. Participants discussed how best to utilize the economic stimulus package to improve and advance American urban public education.
30 Mar 2009 Debra Gwartney gives NPR interview on new book
Debra Gwartney, English faculty, was interviewed by Liane Hansen on National Public Radio's Weekend Edition Sunday for her new book, Live Through This (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt). A story about Gwartney and her daughters was also the central feature of the week of March 23 This American Life broadcast. The book has received positive reviews in The Chicago Tribune, The Baltimore Sun, The Cleveland Plains Dealer, Willamette Week, the Oregonian, the Seattle Times, Bitch magazine, and many others.

Jean Campbell, Middle East Studies Center, was reelected to a two-year term as president of the Middle East Outreach Council, an affiliate of the Middle East Studies Association.
02 Mar 2009 Ralph Bunch appears in documentary aired in Russia
Ralph Bunch, Political Science emeritus faculty, appeared in the documentary Skull and Bones, which was broadcast on Russia's main television channel Jan. 2. Bunch shared his analysis of Yale University's secret society, Skull & Bones, on the 45-minute documentary. George Stephanopoulos of ABC News commented afterward.
02 Mar 2009 Miguel Figliozzi appointed to Transportation Network Modeling Committee
Miguel Figliozzi, Civil and Environmental Engineering faculty, has been appointed by the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies as a member of the Committee on Transportation Network Modeling, ADB30. The committee promotes research and information exchange in transportation network modeling, an interdisciplinary field spanning computer science, logistics, mathematics, operations research, telecommunications, and transportation science. It also fosters effective and rapid sharing of information and experiences among researchers, practitioners, regulators, and decision makers.
