Melody Rose receives honorable mention for forthcoming book
Melody Rose, Political Science faculty, received an honorable mention in the 2008 Carrie Chapman Catt Prize for Research on Women and Politics for the forthcoming co-authored book, Playing the Gender Card? Media, Strategy, and Hillary Clinton's Race for the White House, Lynne Rienner Publishers, 2009. Alan Yeakley receives gubernatorial appointment
Alan Yeakley, Environmental Sciences faculty, received a four-year gubernatorial appointment to serve on the Independent Multidisciplinary Science Team, a scientific review panel charged with advising the state of Oregon on matters related to fish recovery, water quality improvements, and enhancing watershed health. The seven-member board provides independent, scientific analysis and evaluation of state actions and policies under the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds. Yeakley's appointment marks the first time someone from PSU will serve on the team. |

Dilafruz Williams appointed to Metro Policy Advisory Committee
Dilafruz Williams, Education faculty, has been appointed to the Metro Policy Advisory Committee established by the Metro charter approved by voters in 1992. The 28-member committee of local government representatives and citizens advises the Metro Council on the amendment or adoption of the Regional Framework Plan that includes regional transportation, management of urban growth boundary, protection of lands outside the urban growth boundary, and planning responsibilities required by state law. Williams is chair of the Portland School Board. |

Nancy Becker receives 2009 Award for Grassroots Excellence
Nancy Becker, Chemistry adjunct faculty, has received the 2009 Award for Grassroots Excellence, the American Dietetic Association's top award for nutrition advocacy. Becker was nominated by the Oregon Dietetic Association for her leadership and work in public policy. In addition to developing, mentoring, and training leaders and students within the Oregon Dietetic Association, she testified before the Oregon Legislature on breast feeding and school nutrition, and worked with legislators on the importance of high nutrition standards for foods sold outside of the school lunch program. |

Mary Ann Schmidt receives Stevens River-Watch Award
Mary Ann Schmidt, Environmental Sciences and Management, received the Stevens River-Watch Award for her "outstanding efforts in stream monitoring" through the PSU Student Watershed Research Project program. For the past six years, the Clackamas River Basin Council and students from Portland State have teamed up to sample water quality throughout the lower Clackamas watershed. Results were shared with more than 500 streamside landowners. Students from the watershed program also participate in a community celebration by leading various environmental education games. |
