26 Jan 2009 Debra Gwartney receives literary fellowship
Debra Gwartney, English faculty, is one of six Oregon writers awarded a literary fellowship from the Oregon Commission on the Arts. She also won second prize (from 1,600 entries) in the recent Family Circle fiction contest. Her memoir. Live Through This, will be published by Houghton Mifflin on Feb. 10, when Gwartney will give a reading in New York City and will be featured on Good Morning America. As part of a one-month book tour, she'll read at Powell's on Feb. 12.

26 Jan 2009 Ruth Falco and Paula Stanovich receive education inclusion awards
Ruth Falco and Paula Stanovich, Special Education and Counselor Education faculty, received Mobius Inclusion Awards from the Northwest Down Syndrome Association on Jan. 14. Falco received the Early Childhood Educator Inclusion Award and Stanovich received the School-Age Inclusive Educator Award.

Emily Gilliland, Oregon Campus Compact faculty, will march in the 2009 inaugural parade for President-Elect Barack Obama in Washington, D.C., Jan. 20. Gilliland, an alumna of AmeriCorps, is representing the national network of civic leaders.

Hamid Moradkhani, Civil and Environmental Engineering faculty, was elected associate editor of the American Society of Civil Engineers Journal of Hydrologic Engineering. His initial appointment will be from 2008-2010.
12 Jan 2009 Mark Sytsma receives Oregon Department of Agriculture award
Mark Sytsma, Environmental Sciences faculty, received the Distinguished Service Award from the Oregon Department of Agriculture for outstanding contributions and leadership in invasive species management in Oregon at the 2008 Interagency Weed Symposium.
12 Jan 2009 Jennifer Allen appointed to board of Oregon Forest Resources Institute
Jennifer Allen, Graduate Studies and Research faculty, has been appointed by Senate President Peter Courtney and House Speaker Jeff Merkley to the board of the Oregon Forest Resources Institute as its public representative. The public representative is a non-voting ex-officio position. Allen will be the third public representative since the board's formation by the state legislature 17 years ago.
