Marian Wright Edelman to give MLK tribute

Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children's Defense Fund, will be the featured speaker at PSU's community-wide event commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Edelman will talk Thursday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m. in 175 Lincoln Hall. Improve your handwriting at annual free event

Portland State's Continuing Education Press will hold its 12th Annual Handwriting Improvement Workshop Saturday, Jan. 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in 355 Smith Union. Local handwriting experts and authors Barbara Getty and Inga Dubay are taking a break from their nationwide workshops, to give the Portland community a chance to improve their handwriting at no charge.

Memorial service planned for William Tuttle

William J. Tuttle, professor emeritus of music, died at his Portland home Nov. 24 after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. He was 64. A memorial service is planned for Sunday, Jan. 20, at 3 p.m. in 175 Lincoln Hall.

Dr. Tuttle, who earned a doctoral degree in musical arts from University of Texas, joined PSU's Music Department in 1977. For 25 years he contributed significantly to the instrumental music program, directed the University band, and served as assistant department chairman. From 1999 to 2006, he was music director and conductor of the Pacific Crest Wind Symphony and was responsible for expanding and strengthening its ties to PSU. Upon retirement from Portland State in 2003, the wind symphony designated him as "conductor emeritus."

Light rail construction limits Southwest Sixth Avenue

During winter term, Southwest Sixth Avenue in the campus blocks will be narrowed to one or two lanes for light rail construction. Vehicles will not be able to cross Sixth at Southwest Harrison, Hall, College, and Jackson streets. Pedestrian ramps will be provided at all intersections.

Traffic will likely be backed up on Southwest Sixth Avenue. Alternate northbound routes include Southwest Naito, Fourth Avenue and 12th Avenue.

Crews will be digging, jack hammering, installing utilities, welding, setting rail, and paving. Work will occur Mondays through Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. After 6 p.m., construction will be limited to activities that generate little to moderate noise. Floodlights will be used to ensure safety. Following this phase, this area will reopen to vehicles and crews will continue with lower impact finish work.

New certificate program for health care executives

The Professional Development Center is launching a new program that teaches professionals already in the health care industry how to better navigate complex policy and meet rising goals. The program aims to develop leadership skills at every rung of the health care ladder, including establishing discipline and efficiency, and increase overall patient value. read more >

PSU updates affirmative action statement

Portland State's Sexual and Gender Equality Task Force and the Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity have revised Portland State's affirmative action statement to include "gender identity" and "gender expression." This change reflects the state's non-discrimination legislation, effective Jan. 1. read more >
