Volleyball wins Big Sky, heads to NCAA tournament

The Portland State volleyball team is headed to the NCAA Division I Tournament for the first time in school history after defeating top-seeded Eastern Washington Nov. 29 to win the Big Sky Conference Championship. The Vikings take on the fifth-ranked Washington Huskies in Seattle at 4 p.m. Friday.

Before the Vikings and Huskies face off, Santa Clara and Kansas State play at 2 p.m. The winner of each match will meet on Saturday at 2 p.m. for the right to advance to the regionals. Holiday open house for faculty and staff Dec. 16

The campus community is invited to "Celebrate the Season" at a PSU open house Tuesday, Dec. 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Native American Student and Community Center. The event includes light refreshments, a gift drive, and a chance to reconnect with colleagues.

Representatives will be on hand to collect new unwrapped gifts, new or used children's coats, nonperishable food items, and local store gift certificates for PSU student-parents and other local charity groups serving families.

International students spend Thanksgiving with the president

President Wim Wiewel and his wife, Alice, hosted more than 30 international students and faculty for Thanksgiving Dinner. Wiewel's hospitality comes from experience. As an exchange student from Amsterdam, he celebrated his first Thanksgiving while studying in New York.

The Wiewel's guests represented 16 countries: Cambodia, China, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Iran, Japan, Mali, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Taiwan, and Turkey. Watch men's basketball on TV

For the second year, Altitude Sports & Entertainment is televising four regular season Big Sky men's basketball games starting Sunday, Jan. 4, on Comcast Sports Net, channel 37. The defending Big Sky Conference champion team will also appear on Fox Sports Net Dec. 14 at Washington, and Dec. 23 when the Vikings travel to Gonzaga.

Portland State was 23-10 in 2007-08, winning the Big Sky Conference regular season and tournament championships. The Vikings made a first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division I tournament, losing to eventual national champion Kansas. Read more >

Faculty receive Fulbright grants

The U.S. Fulbright Scholars Program awarded 2008-09 grants to Portland State professors Michael Clark, Stephanie Farquhar, John Gallup, Christina Hulbe, Pui Tak Leung, and James Morris. The University is also hosting a visiting Fulbright scholar in history, Mohamed Al Muqadam from Oman. Read more >

Bring a toy to Viking basketball

Admission is free when you bring a new, unwrapped toy to the Portland State women's basketball game Dec. 5 and the men's match Dec. 6. Both teams play Seattle University at 7 p.m. in the Stott Center on campus. Toys will be donated to PSU student-parents, Marines Toys for Tots, and Portland Police Buddy Bear Program.

Mini-grant proposals due Dec. 15

For the 14th year, the PSU Center for Academic Excellence is offering $500 Academic Innovation Mini-grants in support of faculty teaching, scholarship, and engagement. Proposals are being accepted through Dec. 15 on sustainability and community partnerships, Web-enhanced courses, and academic portfolio development. All faculty are encouraged to apply at

Grant training session offered

Faculty are invited to register for "Training for Principal Investigators" offered Wednesday, Jan. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon in the Unitus Building sixth floor conference room. The session is open to faculty who have received a new grant, transferred a project from another university, or who are interested in conducting research at PSU.
