Women's golf wins Big Sky

The Portland State women's golf team won the 2008 Big Sky Conference Championship in Phoenix last week. This is the fourth conference title for women's golf in the past six seasons, which gives the team more Big Sky titles than any other PSU program. The team heads to the NCAA Regional Tournament May 10-12, most likely in Sacramento. read more >

Event to 'Salute' Melody Rose and others

Melody Rose, chair of the Division of Political Science and director of NEW Leadership Oregon, will receive the Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award at PSU Salutes Thursday, May 8, 5:30 p.m. in the Smith Union Ballroom. This annual event, sponsored by the PSU Alumni Association, will also celebrate the outstanding achievements of alumni Tom Fink, Michelle Girts, Pierre Ouellette, and Julie Young as well as the community contributions of Intel. Fit Club biggest losers named

Staff, students, faculty, and a few others, who signed up for the eight-week PSU Fit Club shed more than 1,200 pounds and won $3,000 in cash for their weight loss. The club's biggest loser was Joseph Genduso, M.Eng. '05 and an MBA student who lost 43.8 pounds or 16.9 percent of his body weight.

In its second year, the volunteer-run PSU Fit Club attracted 52 teams that took advantage of visits from NBC biggest loser Ken Coleman and guest trainers, as well as campus walks, specials at the Smith Market, and help from Providence and Kaiser health services.

In addition to Genduso, top winners this year were Stephanie Blackman, Christine Cress, Toeutu Faaleava, Tina Frost, Mark Gregory, Haley Holmes, Steve Jacobson, Ross Lamberth, Marc Nisenfeld, Joe Oreste, Sophie Robertson, Jen Shempert, and Janelle Voegele. The $60 to $400 cash prizes for winners were funded through the $15 entry fee.

Academic career development discussed Thursday

A cross-discipline group of faculty in this year's Academic Innovations Mini-Grant Academic Portfolio Cohort will discuss how the portfolio process can help clarify promotion and tenure Thursday, May 1, from 3 to 5 p.m. in 236 Smith Center. Meet final two Web master candidates

The campus community is invited to meet the final candidates for PSU Web Communications Director. A forum with Kristin Boden-MacKay is planned for Thursday, May 1, and Richard Sipe is scheduled to meeting with the campus community Friday, May 2. Author to discuss human side of Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Sandy Tolan, award-winning broadcast and print journalist, will discuss his book, The Lemon Tree: An Arab, A Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East, Thursday, May 8, at 7 p.m. in 238 Smith Union. A book signing will follow the free event.

Tolan is also an NPR producer and professor at the Annenberg School for Communication. Lemon Tree was awarded the Booklist best book of 2006 and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. The event is sponsored by the PSU English Department and Literary Arts Council.

First discussion of student-learning goals this Wednesday

Debbie Murdock Clock Tower dedication on Sunday

Friends and colleagues of the late Debbie Murdock, former assistant to the president for Government Relations, will gather in the Urban Center Plaza Sunday, May 4, at 3 p.m. to dedicate the metal structure on the corner of Southwest Sixth and Montgomery Streets.
