Portland State hires new athletic director
President Daniel Bernstine has named Michael "Torre" Chisholm as the University's new athletics director, following a national search. Chisholm is the current associate athletic director for development and marketing at University of California, Irvine. read more >
Budget proposal means severe reductions at PSU
President Daniel Bernstine expressed concern after he reviewed the House Ways and Means Committee Co-Chairs' budget proposal for higher education, released March 26. It recommends deep cuts to the governor's budget in both operations and capital funding with potentially severe impacts on students and faculty. read more >
Budget forums next week
PSU vice presidents have worked with the Council of Academic Deans and other administrators to build a budget for 2007-08 that enhances revenues instead of simply cutting the budget. The proposed budget will be discussed at two open forums Monday, April 9, and Wednesday, April 11, from 1 to 2 p.m. in 238 Smith Union. USDA makes major contribution for food industry students
PSU's Food Industry Leadership Center has received a $168,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Higher Education Multicultural Scholars Program to recruit talented, diverse scholars into the Food Industry Management Program. Scholarship support from the USDA was matched with $42,000 from Fred Meyer Stores and the PepsiCo Foundation as part of the center's Pathways Diversity effort. read more >
PSU has its day in Salem April 10
PSU Day in Salem, sponsored by the PSU Advocates and Alumni Association, will feature "Focus on Faculty," to underscore higher education budget issues and needs. Alumni, friends, and faculty are encouraged to attend the activities throughout the day, but especially to visit with their own legislators.
Headquarters will be in room 167-A of the Capitol, where refreshments will be provided. A "Focus on Faculty" exhibit will be featured in the Galleria, and legislative visits are being scheduled. An evening reception with legislators and area alumni will be at the Wild Pear Restaurant, 372 State Street, a few blocks from the Capitol. Faculty and staff invited to eat lunch at Spiritual Life Center
Because there is no longer a faculty and staff lounge, the Spiritual Life Center is offering weekly lunch space for people to connect. Come to the center on SW Broadway next to Annie's Café each Tuesday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Bring your own lunch or order next door.
