Making healthy choices easier

Carlos Crespo, director of the School of Community Health, calls physical activity the "best buy" in fighting high rates of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer in minority populations. The paradox is that minority communities are less likely to have access to healthy food, P.E. in schools, or nearby safe neighborhood parks. All campus forum on Oregon University System structure

The campus community is invited to a forum hosted by President Wim Wiewel on the possible restructuring of the Oregon University System. The forum is set for Tuesday, May 11, 2 to 4 p.m. in 327 Smith Union and will include presentations from OUS Chancellor George Pernsteiner and Lindsay Desrochers, PSU vice president for Finance and Administration. Representatives from the six task forces charged by President Wiewel to study the governance structure will also participate. Read more >

 

Partnered research discussion May 6

Join President Wim Wiewel and 14 PSU community-engaged research scholars in a breakfast discussion of the promise and pitfalls of partnered research on Thursday, May 6, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in 228 Smith Union. RSVP for "Examining Our Work: Community-Engaged Research at PSU" to the Center for Academic Excellence at caestaff@pdx.edu or 5-5642.

Since winter, a diverse group of PSU faculty have been formally meeting and developing case studies about their community-based research projects. Through discussions and reflection, the group has begun to synthesize major themes, insights, challenges, and strengths of research with the community.

 

Retirement Association honors faculty

Charlie White and Bruce Stern were recognized for their scholarly work and service to the University and the Retirement Association of Portland State at the annual President's Luncheon, April 22. White, professor emeritus of history, and Stern, professor emeritus of business administration, received the association's Outstanding Retired Faculty Award. Special recognition awards were also presented to current faculty and administrators Dennis Stovall, Kathryn Kirkland, and Ken Brown for their contributions to the book, Portland State: A History in Pictures.

 

Mouse Davis, Don Read to coach spring game

New coach Nigel Burton has reached back to the past as he looks to the future, naming Mouse Davis and Don Read as coaches for the 2010 Spring Football Game Saturday, May 8, at Hillsboro Stadium. Davis and Read, both former Viking head coaches, will lead the Viking Alumni Game at 1 p.m. and the Spring Game at 2 p.m. Read more >

 

Campus budget forums this week

Lindsay Desrochers, vice president for Finance and Administration; Provost Roy Koch; and Budget Director Michael Fung will present the Portland State budget and answer questions at two campus forums: May 4, 1:30 p.m., 238 Smith Union, and May 5, 10:30 a.m., 228 Smith Union.

 

Winning golfers to play in NCAA regional championship

Viking golfers head to Stanford University this week to play in the NCAA West Regional Golf Championship. The team earned its berth by winning the Big Sky Championship, which resulted in the selection of PSU coach Kathleen Takaishi as 2009-10 Big Sky conference Coach of the Year. This is Takaishi's third season and PSU's fifth title in the past eight seasons. Read more >
