Wim Wiewel chosen as Portland State's eighth president
Wim Wiewel was named new president of Portland State University by the State Board of Higher Education at its Friday, May 2, meeting. Wim Wiewel (pronounced Vim Vee-vell) will begin at PSU in the fall. He is provost and senior vice president of the University of Baltimore. read more >
Ooligan Press wins design awards
Books published by Ooligan Press recently won awards for superior design and outstanding production quality from the Publishers Association of the West. The PSU teaching and general trade press won four PubWest Book design Awards for three different books. Ooligan is part of the book publishing graduate program.
You Have Time for This: Contemporary American Short-Stories won silver in the Short Stories/Poetry/Anthologies category. Dreams of the West: A History of the Chinese in Oregon 1850-1950 won a silver in the Historical/Biographical category. The Portland Red Guide: Sites of Our Radical Past won a bronze in the Guide/Travel Book and in the Jacket/Cover Design categories.
Capstone Fair this Tuesday
See the diverse scope of Capstone courses taught at Portland State at the annual Capstone Fair Tuesday, May 6, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in 327 Smith Union. Faculty will be stationed at tables to answer questions about their courses.
Vikings on Comcast
A new television show, "Camp Glanville: PSU Viking Quest," starts Monday, May 5, at 6 p.m. on Comcast SportsNet Northwest. The 20-week series follows the football team's preparation from spring practice into its first fall game. The half-hour show airs multiple times each day with new episodes premiering each Monday at 6 p.m.
Another show, "From PSU to the Pros," is coming to Comcast SportsNet Northwest. It will feature Brennen Carvalho, former PSU All-American center, as he prepares for a shot at the NFL. Also featured in the show is a Viking who has already made it to the pros: NBA forward Ime Udoka of the San Antonio Spurs. The exact broadcast time and date has yet to be determined.
Nominations sought for student achievement awards
Faculty are invited to nominate outstanding students for Commendation Awards given to an undergraduate and graduate student from each school and college at the Senior Student Recognition Ceremony June 12. Winning students will also be considered for the University Award of Excellence. Nomination forms are available at www.pdx.edu/oaa/news.html and are due Friday, May 16.
