New emergency communication system coming spring term
The University will soon implement a new emergency contact system through National Notification Network, or 3N. From systems off campus, 3N can rapidly send voice messages, e-mails, and text messages to faculty, staff, and students, who have registered their preferred contact information with the new system—and kept it up-to-date. read more >
Tentative collective bargaining agreement reached with AFT
The University reached a tentative agreement on Feb. 22 with the Portland State Faculty Association, Local 3571, American Federation of Teachers (AFT), which represents PSU's part-time faculty. The tentative agreement provides a salary increase of five percent during the 2007-08 academic year and an additional five percent increase in the 2008-09 academic year. PSU and AFT also agreed on all open articles.
Men's basketball to host Big Sky Tournament
With its win against Montana State last Thursday, the men's basketball team claimed the Big Sky Conference regular season championship and the right to host the Big Sky Tournament March 11 and 12 at the Rose Garden Arena. The women's team is currently tied for second place in the Big Sky. Passes for all tournament play are on sale through the PSU Box Office in Smith Union, 5-3307. read more >
Meet Student Affairs VP candidates this week
Candidates for the position of Vice President for Student Affairs are on campus this week. An open session with Vicky Triponey, vice president for student affairs at Pennsylvania State University, is planned for March 4 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in 333 Smith Union. Jackie Balzer, dean of student life at Oregon State University, will meet with the campus community on March 5 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in 329 Smith Union. Evening of wine and soils
The Geology Department is celebrating its 50th anniversary with an evening of wine tasting, dining, a raffle, and Scott Burns discussing terroir—the relationship of soil, climate and wine. Retirement parties planned for longtime faculty members
The campus community is invited to retirement parties for Dawn White and Dan Johnson next Thursday and Friday. White, director of International Faculty Services, will be honored March 13 from 1 to 3 p.m. Johnson, professor of geography, will be celebrated March 14 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Both parties are in the Smith Union Browsing Lounge, room 238.
Music groups to give 10 concerts in coming weeks
The PSU Choirs will give the first of two-weeks of choir, wind, band, jazz, and symphony concerts—10 in all—sponsored by the Music Department through March 20. The PSU Choirs will sing "Cradle Songs" and "Lunar Works," under the direction of Stephen Coker, Thursday, March 6, at noon in 75 Lincoln Hall. The concert is free. Members chosen for Faculty Participation and Empowerment committee
The PSU Faculty Senate Steering Committee has selected members for the Ad Hoc Committee to Assess Faculty Participation and Empowerment, as charged by the Senate at its Feb. 4 meeting. They are Joe Ediger, Michael Flower, Maude Hines, John Rueter, Linda Walton, and Craig Wollner.
The Steering Committee has asked Flower to convene the first meeting, which will include the selection of a chair. The committee is scheduled to make a preliminary report to the PSU Faculty Senate on June 2.
'Technology smart' practice room opens in Library
Students will gain experience and confidence for class presentations by using the University's first Student Practice Presentation Room, which opened today in 304 Millar Library. The room provides the same computing and presentation equipment used in the more than 30 "technology smart" classrooms throughout campus. read more >
