Busy week for Social Sustainability forums
Two talks and a workshop are scheduled this week through the Winter 2008 Social Sustainability Colloquium. A United Nations representative will give a free presentation, “Educations Role in a More Sustainable Future,” Thursday, Jan. 17, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in 294 Smith Union. A free lecture and workshop on soil carbon and global warming are scheduled Jan. 18, 1 to 3 p.m., and Jan. 19, 1 to 5 p.m., in 294 Smith Union. read more >
Free lecture on pharmaceutical industry’s effect on health care
"Hooked: Ethics, the Medical Profession, and Pharmaceutical Industry," a free lecture with nationally renowned bioethicist and family practitioner Dr. Howard Brody, is scheduled Tuesday, Jan. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in 75 Lincoln Hall. read more >

Documentary on New Orleans part of MLK tribute
Free showings of New Home Movies from the Lower 9th Ward, Jonathan Demme’s latest documentary, are scheduled Friday and Saturday, Jan. 18 and 19, at 7 p.m. at 5th Avenue Cinema, Southwest Fifth and Hall streets. Filmmaker Daniel Wolff will talk about his experiences producing the New Orleans documentary after the screenings. read more >
New sustainable development minor in the GorgeIt's a challenge that has faced the Gorge community for years: How best to handle growth while maintaining the region's quality of life and natural resources? But now that challenge has a name, "sustainable development," with new academic offerings made available through Portland State at the Gorge. Beginning winter term, the University is offering a minor in sustainable urban development in conjunction with Columbia Gorge Community College. read more >
