Holiday open house for faculty and staff Dec. 6
The campus community is invited to "Celebrate the Season" at a PSU open house Thursday, Dec. 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Native American Student and Community Center. The event includes light refreshments, a gift drive, and a chance to reconnect with colleagues.
Representatives will be on hand to collect new unwrapped gifts, new or used children's coats, nonperishable food items, and local store gift certificates for PSU student parents, St. Vincent DePaul Women & Children's Shelter, Sunshine Division, William Temple House, The Marines Toys for Tots, Buddy Bears (Portland Police), Northwest Indian Veterans Association, and more. Strategic investments to build capacity, fund engagement initiatives In a final step in the allocation of the biennial budget, Academic Affairs has initiated a process to identify investments that advance Portland State’s leadership position in engagement and support two of its academic priorities—improving student success and enhancing innovative research. Funds will be allocated to achieve these objectives. read more >
Volleyball wins first-ever Big Sky Conference title
The women's volleyball team won its first-ever Big Sky Conference title in its 12th season as a member. The Vikings fell short of an NCAA Tournament berth with its loss in the Big Sky Championship at Sacramento State Nov. 23. As runner-up, the team still had its best finish ever at the tournament. read more >
University hosts emergency response "Train the Trainer Program"
The PSU Public Safety Office Emergency Management Unit in conjunction with the Portland Office of Emergency Management, recently hosted Michigan State University's Campus Community Emergency Management Response Team "Train the Trainer Program" through a grant from the Department of Homeland Security. read more >
Outdoor Program wins national award
On November 3, the Portland State Outdoor Program was awarded the David J. Web Program Excellence Award at the Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education Annual Conference. The Outdoor Program was recognized for its 40 years of activity on campus and its contributions to the region, state, and nation. The annual award also recognized the PSU Outdoor Program as the first outdoor recreation program created by a university. The program traces it roots to 1966 under founders Sam McKinney and then PSU President Branford Price Millar.
The national David J. Webb Program Excellence Award honors an outstanding nonprofit outdoor program, which has provided dynamic and innovative services to its participants, demonstrated professionalism and high standards of conduct, and contributed to the outdoor community at large by sharing information and assisting other programs.
Winning golf coach resigns
After seven seasons in charge, Portland State women's golf coach Felicia Johnston has announced her resignation, citing a desire to spend more time with her family. Her teams won Big Sky Conference titles in 2003, 2004 and 2005—making women's golf the most successful program since Portland State joined the Big Sky Conference in 1996. read more > Local company to operate University Place restaurant
Rafati's, Inc., a longtime family owned and operated Portland food services company, is now moving back into the restaurant business by establishing Encore 310 at University Place. Starting Dec. 1, Encore 310 will be open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. read more >
