Students push faculty to order textbooks

Posters are up and postcards will soon follow reminding teaching faculty to place textbook orders by Friday, Nov. 16. The Associated Students of PSU is directing a new textbook affordability campaign with a message to professors: failing to meet deadlines for course textbook ordering limits the bookstore's ability to purchase used textbooks—and used textbooks mean lower prices for students. read more >

Higher Ed Board reviews student fee and tuition structures

At its November meeting, the State Board of Higher Education considered changes in student resource fees and tuition model for the Oregon University System. The proposal would fold resource fees into tuition during the next three to four years, so that financial aid calculations can include these fees where eligible. read more >

Neuroscience and conflict resolution lecture on Thursday

National experts Jeffrey Schwartz and Stephanie West will discuss "Leading Your Brain: The Neuroscience of Self-leadership" Thursday, Nov. 15, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Oregon Convention Center. Their talk launches the first ever Neuroscience of Conflict Resolution conference that continues all day Friday. The lecture is $35; to register call 5-4832. read more >

Funding renewed for McNair Scholars program

The Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program at Portland State was recently re-authorized by the U.S. Department of Education for another four-year funding cycle. PSU will receive $231,000 each year, while contributing $528,968 to the program, which underwrites scholars' expenses for curriculum, research, an internship stipend and travel. The program is accepting applications for the 2007-08 program years. read more >

Children's Book Week at PSU Bookstore

Celebrate Children's Book Week at the PSU Bookstore Nov. 13-17 with a 50 percent discount for bookstore members on all children's books, K-6 teaching aids, and children's study and skill improvement books. Non-members receive a 30 percent discount. Membership is easy and free; sign up at customer service. The bookstore's annual holiday super sale members' night is also coming Nov. 27.

Renting a van for University use is still possible

The State Motor Pool with its 12-passenger vans moved off campus months ago, but it is still possible to rent its vans, SUVs, and cars from the Swan Island location. There are also convenient van and car rental options through Flexcar and Enterprise Rent a Car. Most require an application and all entail advance registration, age requirements, and a department index code. read more >
