This fall may see the biggest freshman class ever
This academic year, University officials are projecting a 12th straight year of enrollment growth and the highest number of entering freshman in Portland State's history. The freshman class is expected to reach 4,136 students—a possible 5.8 percent increase over last year. The Oregon University System will release official fourth-week enrollment numbers in November. read more >
No bombs, no planes: Picasso's Guernica discussed
The artistic and historical significance of Pablo Picasso's painting Guernica is the topic of a free lecture Friday, Oct. 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Library's second floor. Accompanying the discussion are facsimiles of preliminary sketches for the painting, which protests the horrors of war. Traveling photo exhibit opens with lecture
During October, a photo exhibit titled "Beggars and Choosers: Motherhood is NOT a Class Privilege in America" is on display in the White Gallery, 289 Smith Union. To kick off the exhibit, award-winning author Rickie Solinger will discuss "Nine Ways of Looking at a Poor Woman" Thursday, Oct. 4, at 3:30 p.m. in the Smith Union Multicultural Center. Nomination for honorary degree candidates sought
The campus community is invited to nominate candidates for a PSU honorary degree to be awarded at the 2008 Spring Commencement. The University seeks nominations of individuals who have achieved outstanding scholarship or artistic accomplishments or performed exceptional public service. Wearing school colors on Fridays
Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to wear Portland State gear on Fridays to promote PSU pride. The University Market in Smith Union has items for order, and the PSU Bookstore offers 25 percent off PSU apparel to members (membership is easy and free) on Fridays before home football games. The Vikings are playing Northern Arizona this Saturday, Oct. 6, 1:30 p.m. at PGE Park. Game tickets are on sale at the PSU Box Office in Smith Union.
Learn about publicizing and promoting PSU programs
A free session, "Publicity, Promotion and Tools: Helping You Tell the PSU Story," is scheduled Thursday, Oct. 11, at 9 a.m. in 238 Smith Union. The event is sponsored by the Office of University Communications, which provides marketing, media relations, print publications, and Web communications for the University.
The session will include information on criteria for news media, ordering promotional items, working with creative services on print publications, creating publications from downloadable templates, and training for Web site management. The session will also include results from a recent community perceptions survey and an employee communications survey. Reservations are appreciated: call 5-3711 or e-mail ucomm@pdx.edu.
