A 'grown-up' Portland State presented at convocation
The message that Portland State is no longer a developing institution, but a mature University with established and respected faculty, research, and academic programs was shared with faculty and staff at fall convocation Sept. 18. Interim President Michael Reardon, Provost Roy Koch, and Vice President Lindsay Desrochers presented a talk they gave to the Oregon State Board of Higher Education earlier in the month. $1.5 Million donated to Judaic Studies
Business Wire founder and Portland native Lorry Lokey has granted $1.5 million, through the Lorry I. Lokey Supporting Foundation of the San Francisco Jewish Community Endowment Fund, to establish the Lorry I. Lokey Chair in Judaic Studies at Portland State University. <read more>
Governor Signs Post-Secondary Education Executive Orders
In August, Gov. Ted Kulongoski signed two executive orders, one creating a Postsecondary Quality Education Commission, which is charged with developing a new model for assessing the funding needs of community colleges and universities. The second executive order directs the state to update the methodology for developing funding needs for community colleges. <read more>
The Rope opens theater season this week
The PSU Theater Arts performance season opens Friday, Sept. 28, with The Rope by Albert Camus. The play, which continues through Oct. 6 in 115 Lincoln Hall, is directed and translated by Nico Izambard, a graduate student originally from France. Ticket are $5 at the PSU Box Office. <read more>

Representing higher education in Pendleton
A Portland State delegation of administrators, students, and their families attended the Pendleton RoundUp for the second time Sept. 12-14. They joined presidents from sister universities in discussing funding and support for higher education in Oregon. Highlights for the group included walking in the parade, interviews with local media, attending a PSU donor/alumni dinner, and meeting with state and U.S. legislators.
The Portland State delegation was led by Provost Roy Koch and included his wife, Donna, and administrators Cassie McVeety, Dianne Alves, and Julie Smith. Students Rudy Soto, Ryan Klute, Vivian Sampson Brown, Nicole Charley, and Sweetwater Sahme also attended. Pendleton resident Dennis Olson '68, MS '80 served as host for the PSU group.
Projects across campus receive transportation funding
Following a rigorous, peer-review process, the Oregon Transportation Research and Education Consortium recently selected 36 multi-disciplinary projects from universities across the state to round out its 2007-2008 funding year. Faculty and students from Portland State engineering, urban affairs, business, and liberal arts and sciences will lead 23 of the selected research, education, and technology transfer projects.
