This site contains information about our Ph.D. program and all the forms necessary to apply for admission and graduate research assistantships.
Application Deadline:
January 15 for Fall Term admission (and for graduate research assistantships).
When you are ready to apply see instructions below:
It is very important that you observe the following procedures carefully. You need to send two separate packets of information, one to Graduate Admissions and the other to our office. It is important that you gather the information together and send it as complete packets. If not, processing is slowed by the need to match information as it filters in. This is particularly important for the information sent to Graduate Admissions.
Application packet for Graduate Admissions Office:
- Application for Admission to Graduate Degree Programs and $50 application fee (do not send cash). To avoid a delay in processing, please secure the application fee to the front of the application.
- One official copy of your complete transcripts, graduate and undergraduate, sent in unopened envelopes from your colleges/universities.
- International applicants must submit TOEFL score of 550 or better (taken within one year) if native language is not English.
- International applicants must submit Affidavit of Support
- International applicants must submit Declaration of Finances
Send completed packet for the Office of Admissions to:
Office of Admissions
P.O. Box 901
Portland, OR 97207-0901
Application packet for Office of the Dean:
- A personal essay. It is a separate 500 word essay detailing why you chose this program and how it meets your career goals.
- A copy of the Application for Admission to Graduate Degree Programs sent to the Admissions Office.
- A copy, official or unofficial, of your complete transcripts.
- If you are applying for a graduate assistantship, indicate that on the evaluation forms and fill out the assistantship application.
- Three evaluation forms/letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with your academic and/or professional background. Persons providing evaluations may send their letters directly to us.
- Official scores of your Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Please note that you should make arrangements to take the GRE well in advance of the application deadline. You can contact GRE services for information about the test. You can also schedule your exam through Sylvan Learning Centers. If you take the computer based test, you will receive your scores as soon as you finish the exam. Make sure to write down your scores. You can then report them directly to the Ph.D. Admissions Officer who can call and confirm your scores after about a week. This significantly speeds up the process. If you have questions, you can contact Rod Johnson, Ph.D. Admissions, Office of the Dean, College of Urban and Public Affairs.
- International applicants must submit a copy of your TOEFL score (taken within one year).
