Portland entrepreneur-turned-adviser Shelley Gunton will lead Portland State University's new Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, officials announced this week.

University officials view the new center, which doesn't have a physical space yet, as hub for the region's entrepreneurial activity. Gunton is joining the public university after years of advising other entrepreneurs as they launch their startup companies.

She's tasked with writing a business plan and lining up funding for the new center, which will draw from promising ideas across the campus. Her work as executive director began Feb. 1.

"This is a classic statup," Gunton said. "There's a vision for what this could be, but my job is to build out a business plan and create a funding strategy."

It's a busy time for Gunton, who's also chairing this year's Angel Oregon investment conference, where startups compete for funding. The company she co-founded, Castor & Pollux Natural PetWorks, won the competition in 2005. She sold a majority stake in the business three years later.
