Meet Professor Ken Peterson

Kenneth D. Peterson, PhD, is a professor of curriculum and instruction in the, Graduate School of Education at Portland State University. He was a classroom teacher, and has over 35 years of experience in educating beginning teachers and veteran staff development. He has taught at the schools of education of the University of California, Berkeley and University of Utah.

Dr. Peterson has conducted research in teacher evaluation for more than 25 years. He was principal investigator for three U.S. Department of Education grants to study innovative teacher evaluation for school district career ladder systems. Dr. Peterson also has been a consultant or presenter to more than 65 school districts and state and national level educational organizations. He has been an expert witness in teacher dismissal litigation and acted as past president of the Consortium for Research on Educational Accountability and Teacher Evaluation.

Dr. Peterson's books are Teacher Evaluation: A Comprehensive Guide to New Directions and Practices (Corwin Press), Effective Teacher Evaluation: A Guide for Principals (with daughter Cathy, Corwin Press), and Effective Teacher Hiring: A Guide for Getting the Best (ASCD). He has published more than 45 articles concering teacher evaluation. Dr. Peterson also acts as consulting editor for the Journal of Personnel Evaluation in Education. Current activities include writing a textbook on Classroom Communication and Management and evaluation of science education projects at the University of California, Davis.
