Dr. Henry Kass
Emeritus Professor of Public Administration
Dr. Henry D. Kass was born in Rochester, New York in 1934. He attended public schools there and graduated cum laude with a B.A. from Alfred University in 1956. He holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in government from the American University in Washington, D.C.
After a brief career as a community organizer with the Redevelopment Land Agency in Washington, D.C., Dr. Kass joined the faculty of Eastern Washington University. There he founded the Masters Program in Public Administration. In 1988 he left EWU to join the Public Administration program at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. There he served as director of the program’s Executive Leadership Institute. In 1995 he joined the faculty of the Hatfield School of Government, Portland State University, where he coordinated the PhD. program in Public Administration and Policy. He is currently Professor Emeritus at Portland State University.
Dr. Kass has been a management training consultant since 1974. He was senior associate with the Praxis Consulting Group of Framingham, Massachusetts, and principal associate of his own firm, Henry Kass Associates. His major training areas were management ethics, customer service, power and influence in the workplace, enhancing productivity and negotiations.
Among his clients have been John Hancock Insurance, Rohm and Haas Chemical Corp., Stratus Computer, Timber Operators Council, SAIF Corporation, State of Washington, State of Oregon, METRO, City of Portland, City of Honolulu, Washington County, State of Massachusetts, Marion County, Multnomah County, City of Newberg, City of Lake Oswego, City of Tigard and City of Gresham. He has also served on the faculty of the Pacific Program, University of Oregon. The Legacy and Police Certification Programs of Executive Leadership, PSU.
Kass served on the editorial board of Administrative Theory and Praxis. He was the editor of Advances in Public Administration, a series published by Sage and was co-editor ofImages and Identities in Public Administration, Sage publishers, 1990.
Dr. Kass is married to the former Rosetta Crary. He has two grown sons and two grandsons and a granddaughter. His hobbies are writing children’s literature, gardening and beachcombing on the Oregon Coast.
