The Counseling Education faculty and students are involved in multiple research projects as part of an ongoing research team. Faculty research interests include counselor development and collaboration between school and family systems, family systems theory and the effects of family experience on psychosocial development in adolescence and adulthood, as well as psychological adaptation to disability, stress, and life crises.
In the spring of 2008 the faculty received a grant from Portland State University's Diversity Action Council to examine barriers that multicultural students face to seeking counseling on campus. The faculty and students worked together to formulate interview questions, to recruit multicultural students for group interviews, and to compile the data. A poster presentation of the initial findings was displayed at the President's Diversity Awards ceremony on May 21, 2008. During the fall of 2008 the entire research results will be presented at the Western Association for Counselor Education and Supervison Conference in Palm Springs.
