HSK/YCT/BCT Language Proficiency Exam
The Confucius Institute at PSU is honored to be one of only a few locations in the USA to host the HSK, YCT and BCT Chinese language proficience exams.
What are the HSK, HSKK, YCT, and BCT?
Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) is China’s official, standardized Chinese language proficiency test for non-native speakers. The test is administered in many nations and supervised by the State HSK Commission of the PRC Ministry of Education.
Hanyu Shuiping Kouyu Kaoshi (HSKK) is a standardised oral test that aims to test Chinese as second speakers' ability in spoken Chinese. The results of HSK and HSKK testing can be used to decide an applicant’s entry to Chinese tertiary institutions or help demonstrate Chinese proficiency to potential employers. HSK and HSKK are also a prerequisite when applying for Confucius Institue scholarship to study in China.
The Youth Chinese Test (YCT) for non-native primary and secondary school students.
The Business Chinese Test (BCT) for business professionals is more specialized and consists of two (2) separate sections.
Purpose of HSK, HSKK, YCT, & BCT Certification
HSK, HSKK, YCT, and BCT exist to certify that non-native Chinese speakers are qualified to communicate in Chinese at the level required for business, school, and daily interactions in China. Educational institutions and businesses often require proof of language proficiency for non-natives.
HSK, HSKK, YCT, and BCT certification is granted based on the level of testing taken, and may provide exemption from Chinese language courses.
The HSK, HSKK, YCT, and BCT certificates are valid permanently. However, for students applying to Chinese colleges or universities, the accompanying score report is only valid for two years.
