The National Scholarship Program exists to help CLAS undergraduates and graduates apply for nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships such as the Goldwater, the Rhodes, the Gates Cambridge. The National Scholarship Sponsors link to the left indicates a representative sample.
Typically, the preparation to win one of these scholarships begins during the student's undergraduate career (sometimes as early as the freshman year) and intensifies during their junior or senior year.
It is expected that applicants will have outstanding grades, will have an interest in, and experience with, the wider world demonstrated through volunteer work, and will have excellent writing and critical thinking skills. The Coordinator of the National Scholarship Program works closely with each applicant helping to link the student with a faculty member in the student's field of study, to identify meaningful volunteer activities and to match the student with undergraduate research opportunities.
Erik Jensen, a CLAS graduate, is now a Ph.D. student at Cambridge University after winning the prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship. The monetary value of the Gates Cambridge is $50,000 a year for a possible six years.
You are most welcome to consult the Coordinator of the National Scholarship Program for help in identifying whether or not a nationally competitive scholarship will suit your academic needs and for help in making application:
