A Message from the Dean
I am thrilled to join Portland State University as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.
If it is to have a prosperous future, our region must have a world-class university. Our students need a place to learn how to read and think critically and write persuasively, to develop a global perspective, and to prepare for careers in our fast-changing world. Regional businesses, Oregon Health & Science University, and our colleagues in pre-K-12 education need a partner for innovation and research. Portland State meets those needs and is that partner.
The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences has been and will be central to Portland State's mission. In recent years the College has made tremendous progress in teaching, research, learning innovation, interdisciplinary scholarship, and community partnerships. I am excited to build on that foundation. I bring to the task my experience from the University of Colorado, where, as Associate Dean in the College of Arts & Sciences, I oversaw 13 departments, 368 tenure-track faculty, and 1,200 graduate students.
I came to Portland State because President Wiewel's core themes strike a chord with my own values for higher education — experiential learning to support student success; interdisciplinary study and scholarship; community engagement and partnerships; building a global crossroads; and expanding resources for our students and community.
This is a seminal time for higher education. The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences faces exciting choices. Over the coming year I will be leading the College to establish long-range priorities and seeking input from all our diverse constituents. I look forward to opportunities to talk with you about our future and to share my confidence and enthusiasm for how we will make Portland State an even greater urban university.
Dr. Susan W. Beatty
