Social Studies Endorsement Pre-requisites

Students who do not yet have a degree and want to be a social studies teacher should major in one of the departments in the social studies field (history, geography, economics, political science, or in the interdisciplinary social sciences major). Beyond their major department, students must have a minimum of at least 8 credits in each of the social studies areas. Introductory course work in these areas can include:

Hst 201, 202 U.S. History
Hst 101, 102 Western Civilization
Geog 210, 230 Physical Geography, Environment and Society
Econ 201, 202 Micro Economics, Macro Economics
PS 101, 102, 200 U.S. Government, U.S. Politics, Intro to Politics

These requirements represent the minimum credits required for admission into the GTEP in the subject area. Students wishing to be more competitive are encouraged to do more than the minimum preparation in the social studies subject area.

Students who have a degree must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA on their undergraduate course work. Students without a 3.0 undergraduate GPA may be considered for admission based on a 3.0 GPA on 12 approved graduate credits. Students must earn at least a C- in each course in the endorsement area.

For students who majored in geography, history, economics, political science, or general social sciences. Must have a minimum of 8 credits in each of the following departments: history, economics, geography, political science. Students are required to take Psy 311- Human Development, and Ed 420 Introduction to Education (includes practicum) is strongly recommended. Course work should be taken for differentiated grades.

For students who majored in an area other than within the social studies endorsement. Must have completed a minimum of 9 credits in each of the following four areas: history, geography, economics, and political science. Students need Psy 311- Human Development, and Ed 420 Introduction to Education (includes practicum) is strongly recommended. Course work should be taken for differentiated grades.
