In Miriam, choreographer Nora Chipaumire and dancer Okwui Okpokwasili explore the tensions that women face between public expectations and private desires, selflessness and ambition, and the perfection and sacrifice of the feminine ideal. Chipaumire’s work takes its name from a trio of iconic women: the mother of Jesus; the sister of Aaron and Moses; and the South African singer, activist, and icon Miriam Makeba. In keeping with the name’s heritage, Miriam is disobedient and obstinate, rebellious and beloved. Learn more about Nora Chipaumire at picaresourceroom.org
