Biochemistry Major

The Biochemistry track is designed for students seeking to pursue careers in the life sciences, and in addition to quantitative course work on fundamental chemical and physical systems also includes course work in biology as well as in the chemical systems and processes underlying biology.

The following is a suggested schedule for a degree in biochemistry. A student must confer periodically with his/her adviser. This action will enable the program of study to be individualized and will ensure that the student has met all the prerequisites. Refer to the Bulletin for a full and authoritative description of major requirements.

Courses taken under the undifferentiated grading option (pass/no pass) are not acceptable to fulfill department major degree requirements. A grade of "C-" or above, and a combined GPA of 2.25 or higher, is required for all courses taken to satisfy departmental major requirements, including courses from supporting departments (i.e., mathematics and physics).

* Two courses must be taken (beyond the requirements listed above) including: CH 403 Honor’s Thesis; CH 410 Selected Topics; CH 411 Chemical Bonding; CH 412/413 Advanced Inorganic; CH 424/425 Elec. & Instr. for Chemists/Lab (counts as one course); CH 430/431 Advanced Organic Chemistry; CH 436/437 Spectrometric Analysis and Lab (counts as one course); CH 445 El. Materials Lab; CH 490/491/492/493/494 Biochemistry/Lab, (Other courses shall be approved in advance by a departmental academic advisor.)
