Apply to Graduate School

The Portland State University Department of Chemistry welcomes applications for fall term (mid-September) admission. The Department's online application form is available here

Deadlines

  • The deadline for applications to the Master of Science and Ph.D. programs arrive at the chemistry department is January 15. Applications received after this date may not be considered for admission

  • The deadline for applications to the Master of Arts programs arrive at the chemistry department is April 1. Applications received after this date may not be considered for admission

What you will need in order to apply

Applicants to the masters or doctoral programs should have training equivalent to that of an undergraduate chemistry or biochemistry major, including coursework in the fundamental areas of chemistry (organic, physical, analytical, biological, and inorganic). It is assumed that an applicant will possess a good working knowledge of mathematics and physics. You will also be asked to submit the following:

  • Graduate Record Exam (GRE) results. Only the general test is required; the subject test is optional.

    • Please notify ETS that you are applying to Portland State University (code 4610); if you did not do so at the time of the test you should contact ETS with this information prior to submitting your application.

  • Transcripts for all of your higher education experience

    • You may upload pdf or html copies into your application or mail a hardcopy. Official transcripts are required following admission to the University; more information is available here.

  • Some international students are required to take an English proficiency exam results. Click here to see requirements, accepted exams and required scores

    • If you are required to complete one of these tests, please notify the test center that you are applying to Portland State University; if you did not do so at the time of the test you should contact them with this information prior to submitting your application

  • At least two letters of recommendation from people familiar with your academic abilities. These letters must be received for your application to be complete

How to apply

Application to a graduate program in chemistry at Portland State University is a two stage process:

  1. Complete the online departmental application

    • There is no fee to apply to the Department of Chemistry

  2. Complete the online university application

    • This process costs $67 but does not need to be completed at the same time as the departmental application

    • Please note the university admission office may require additional documentation not required by the Department of Chemistry
