Apply for Graduate Study in Chemistry at Portland State University

Applicants to the masters or doctoral programs should have training equivalent to that of an undergraduate chemistry or biochemistry major, including coursework in the fundamental areas of chemistry (organic, physical, analytical, biological, and inorganic). It is assumed that an applicant will possess a good working knowledge of mathematics and physics.

The deadline for applications to the MS and PhD programs arrive at the chemistry department is January 15th. Applications received after this date may not be considered for admission.

The deadline for applications to the MA programs arrive at the chemistry department is April 1st. Applications received after this date may not be considered for admission.

The Department of Chemistry accepts applications for admission in the fall term (mid-September) only.

Graduate students admitted to the department pursuing a PhD or MS degree are usually financially supported (please see Financial Assistance).

What you will need in order to apply

  • You will need to take the general (Graduate Record Exam) (GRE) – general test only, subject test is optional.  You must notify ETS that you are applying to Portland State University (code 4610), if you did not do so at the time of the test you should contact ETS with this information prior to submitting your application.

  • You will need transcripts for all of your higher education experience.  You may upload pdf or html copies into your application or mail a hardcopy.  Official transcripts are required for application to the university admissions office.

  • Some international students are required to take an English proficiency exam results (click here to see requirements, accepted exams and required scores).  If you are required to complete one of these test you must notify the test center that you are applying to Portland State University, if you did not do so at the time of the test you should contact them with this information prior to submitting your application.

  • You will need to find at least 2 people familiar with your academic abilities that are willing to provide letters of recommendation for you.  These letters must be received for your application to be complete.

There is no fee to apply to the chemistry department.

How to apply

Application to a graduate program in chemistry at Portland State University is a two stage process.

You should complete the online departmental application process first. This process is free. Follow the link below. Applications are due January 15th (PhD, MS) and April 1st (MA).

The second stage of the application process is to complete the online university application. This process has a $50 fee but does not need to be completed at the same time as the departmental application. The deadline for graduate university applications is April 1st. Please note the university admission office may require additional documentation not required by the department of chemistry.

You must mail any hardcopies of transcripts to Graduate Admissions Coordinator, Department of Chemistry, Portland State University, P.O. Box 751, Portland, Oregon 97207).  You should ensure that letter of recommendation are received by the department no later than January 15th (April 1st for MA applicants).  Your application is not complete until these are received.
