First Annual Cesar Chavez Week at Portland State University

La Casa Latina at Portland State University will be holding a Cesar Chavez Week celebration during the week of April 8-13

La Casa Latina is a part of the Cultural Centers at Portland State University. The Cultural Centers’ mission is to create a student-centered inclusive environment that enriches the university experience. We honor diversity, explore social justice issues, celebrate cultural traditions, and foster student identities, success and leadership.

April 8-13, La Casa Latina at Portland State University in collaboration with other student groups is holding its first annual Cesar Chavez Week Celebration. This will be a week of events that will commemorate Cesar Chavez and celebrate social justice.  Listed below are the various events that will be taking place throughout the week:

April 8th, 1-2pm: Cesar Chavez: His Life, His Work – An introductory workshop on Cesar Chavez held by Professor De Anda in Chicano Studies.

April 9th, 1-2:30pm: Cesar Chavez Birthday Party – A social event designed to inform the community about Cesar Chavez through traditional Latin American games and celebration.

Location: Parkway North Smith Memorial Student Union

April 10th, 6-8pm: Tim Wise Keynote - Guest Speaker Tim Wise will be coming to campus. Tim Wise is a prominent speaker on anti-racism and an avid White ally/advocate.

Location: Stott Center

April 10th, 8-9pm: Tim Wise Reception - This will take place after the keynote and will give students the opportunity to meet with Tim Wise one on one.

Location: Multicultural Center Smith Memorial Student Union 228

April 11th, 1:30-3:30pm: Community Fair – La Casa Latina be inviting various organizations from both on and off campus to table at the Multicultural Center. Both students and community members can understand the resources that are available to them as well as network with community groups.

April 12th, 12-1:30pm: Art through Social Justice - Students from both PSU and Portland Community College will be exhibiting some of their art that emphasizes Chicano and Latino culture.

Location: La Casa Latina Smith Memorial Student Union Room 229

April 13th, 9-3pm: Migrant Housing Tour – Student will be given the opportunity to explore the migrant housing community in Woodburn, Oregon. The goal will be educate student ways to get involved and provide assistance to these communities.
