Tip Your Lid
Partner: Washington County
Start Date: April 2011
The Tip Your Lid (TYL) project provides recycling and waste minimization education and outreach in Washington County. Project staff conduct field outreach for multifamily and single-family residences with the goal of establishing direct lines of communication between multifamily managers and Washington County staff. This communication, in combination with the provision of educational materials, is expected to increase recycling rates and reduce landfill bound waste from single family residents and multifamily communities.
The TYL project is currently distributing durable recycling bags at multifamily communities, as a part of a strategy to increase recycling and reduce plastic bag contamination in recycling bins. The project will distribute over 1,000 bags in more then 10 multifamily communities and conduct in-person educational outreach with at least 30 percent of the over 1,000 residents reached.
During the summer of 2011 TYL completed in-person outreach with multifamily residents, reaching 300 residents at 12 communities. Upon receiving a durable bag and having recycling questions answered, one resident stated, "I've lived here for 22 years and nobody has ever talked to me about recycling, thank you!" CES has visited over two-thirds of the 1,000 multifamily communities in Washington County, and conducted door-to-door educational outreach to many of them, including customized Spanish/ English presentations.
