Port of Portland Technical Assistance Project (PTAP)

Since 2002, CES has worked with the Port of Portland to assist in achieving the Port's waste reduction goals. During this time, CES has conducted assessments of the Port's aviation, marine, navigation, and administrative facilities. Using current waste audit data, CES helps the Port implement the following programs:

  • Food Waste Diversion Program - PDX airport food and beverage tenants along with partnering businesses send approximately 28 tons per month of pre- and post-consumer food waste to a composting facility.
  • Educational Outreach - CES provides training and education to Port employees and tenants about the Port's waste minimization program. CES also assists in the development of educational materials like the "PDX Recycles" and "PDX Food Waste Diversion" brochures.
  • Hosting bi-annual "Clean Up" events, where airport tenants can safely recycle/donate for reuse/disposal of their bulky, non-hazardous items.
  • Facilitating efforts like the "Save our Supplies" event to collect and reuse office supplies throughout the Port.
  • Developing innovative methods to capture landfill bound waste such as the implementation of liquid collection stations at PDX security checkpoints.
  • Deplaned Waste Program - working with airlines to reduce the amount of waste generated from flights and increase on board recycling rates
  • Generating press coverage through news stories and journal publications.
