Certificate Track: Intro to Web Development

This online course introduces advanced web development methods utilizing HTML5 and CSS3 coding. Students are guided through the development of a fully hand coded HTML5 and CSS3 website utilizing efficient workflow and best practices. The concept of effective HTML and Style Sheet design is a fundamental objective taught in this course.

The HTML5 and CSS3 course follows seven modules over a five week period. Each module introduces an important topic in HTML5 and CSS3 development and builds upon a previous module's concepts. All materials are geared toward learning by example using hand coding techniques with a strong emphasis on code quality and consistent design.

This online class has a weekly assignment and discussion in standards-based HTML5 followed by an introduction to Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).

What You Cover
1. Maintaining Code Structure — Adhering to strict document structure is a cornerstone to web development. In this course, you will learn how to structure your HTML and Style Sheet documents along a framework that includes separate areas for headings, text, menus, and images.
2. Keeping Well-formed — The future of web development revolves around the concept of extensibility. This is the process that allows a particular web technology to grow and adapt to changing technology. In this course you will learn by hand coding HTML5 and CSS3 using well-formed coding practices that will allow your pages to become extensible and standards compatible.
3. Developing a Consistent Design Scheme — Although the design of a website design can take many directions, there are a few universally accepted design principles that will ensure your web site is visually appealing and offers good usability. Visual concepts explored in this course include typography, color schemes, white space, images, backgrounds, and interactivity.
4. Applying Best Practices — When designing a web site using style sheets, you will find that there are many ways to do the same thing. The Best Practices approach is the foremost principle taught in this course which utilizes guidelines set forth by the World Wide Consortium (W3C) for maintaining readability, standardization, extensibility, and compatibility. In this course, you will apply the tips tricks, and best practices of applying style sheet formatting efficiently to you web site projects that are both standards compliant and browser friendly.

Module 1 – HTML5 & CSS3 Structure — Explore HTML5 and CSS3 syntax and how to write code to establish a basic HTML5 Document Structure.
Module 2 – CSS3 Selectors & Inheritance — Review the use of CSS3 Selectors and how they are used to take advantage of CSS Inheritance.
Module 3 – Body & Header Design — Explore HTML5 and CSS3 content development methods for formatting Default Body characteristics, fonts,  and page titles.
Module 4 – Paragraphs & List Design — Explore HTML5 and CSS3 content development methods for formatting inline Paragraph and List elements.
Module 5 – Tables & Form Design — Explore HTML5 and CSS3 content development methods for formatting Table and Form Elements.
Module 6 – HTML5 Navigation — Develop interactive buttons with style properties for a five state menu navigation system .
Module 7 – HTML5 Layout Design — Experiment with several flexible HTML5 and CSS3 layout concepts for organizing website content and navigation.
