Engineering Certificate in Applied Electron Microscopy


The Engineering Certificate in Applied Electron Microscopy program fills the gap between electron microscopy theory and engineering problem-solving and provides extensive applications training for engineers and technicians.

The program is the culmination of six individual certificates. Attend one training or all of the following:

-Scanning XPS and Auger Electron Spectroscopy (January 12-16, 2015)

-Focus Ion Beam Techniques and Applications (February 9-13, 2014)

-Transmission Electron Microscopy and Defects Analysis (March 9-13, 2015)

-Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy and Nanoprobe Analysis (May 11-15, 2015)

-Electron Back Scatter Diffraction and Its Applications (July 13-17 2015)

-Scanning Electron Microscopy and Microanalysis (September 14-18 2015)

Electron microscopy and related spectroscopy reveals details at the micrometer, nanometer and sub-nanometer scale. The related techniques of SEM / EDX / WDS, EBSD, FIB, TEM / STEM / EDX / EELS, XPS / AES are ideal analytical techniques for process development, failure analysis, and product analysis. By the end of the classes, participants can expect to know how best to optimize the performance of microscopes and spectrometers as well as their experimental setups, routinely maintain the instruments, interpret the data, and apply the related techniques for engineering problem-solving.

·       Fundamentals of instrumentation and routine maintenance

·       Principles of instrument operation

·       Optimization of data acquisitions: general approaches, issues and solutions

·       Data processing: general approaches, techniques rules of thumb, issues and solutions

·       Applications for semiconductor engineering

·       Applications for metallurgical engineering

·       Applications for chemical engineering



Each certificate training is five days, Monday-Friday. Combination of lecture and hands-on demonstration. Daily activities typically include two 1.5-hour lectures, three 2-h practical labs.
