Melanie Dixon-Carldwell, MS ’09, has received the 2013 PSU President’s Diversity Staff Award. She is a graduate of the GSE’s Postsecondary Adult and Continuing Education master’s degree and holds a graduate certificate in Teaching Adult Learners. She is the PSU Assistant Director of Diversity and Multicultural Student Services in Student Affairs, where she works to advocate for minority students on campus. Since earning her master’s in 2009, she has worked for PSU, first as the African American Student Services Coordinator, where she managed over 200 students, and curre ntly as the director of Diversity and Multicultural Student Services. She is distinguished for her accomplishments in promoting PSU diversity goals and social justice initiatives.
“It is so fitting that she be honored in this way, and the commitment to diversity that she demonstrates as the Assistant Director of Diversity and Multicultural Student Services is the same dedication that powered her excellent work as a PACE student,” says GSE Professor Michael J. Smith, who served as her advisor, and who wholeheartedly agrees with the selection. “Always focused, prepared, collegial in class, Melanie was not afraid to bring up difficult topics and did so in a way that never alienated her classmates. To date, she is the only graduate assistant that has worked with me, and her efforts helped me complete two papers that were later published. She is an outstanding human being!”
