Multicultural Special Education - Faculty
Julie Esparza Brown, PhD, is an assistant professor in Special Education at Portland State University. After 18 years in public schools as a bilingual teacher, special education teacher and school psychologist, she joined PSU and directed the award-winning Bilingual Teacher Pathway program to continue her work in providing equitable education for all students, particularly underrepresented groups. Upon receiving her doctorate, Dr. Esparza Brown joined the Department of Special Education where she teaches courses and publishes in the areas of bilingual assessment, literacy instruction and interventions for emergent bilinguals, and legal foundations of special education. Additionally, she is a national consultant in all aspects of assessing and instructing emergent bilinguals (formerly known as English language learners) with and without disabilities.
