Interpersonal Neurobiology - Certificate Information

What is a Certificate of Completion?

Certificates of Completion are awarded to all students who successfully complete a series of linked courses with a defined focus. The certificate distributed upon completion of the identified courses reflects the total number of credits earned (graduate or undergraduate). These certificates of completion have been approved by the appropriate department(s). The individual courses will appear on your PSU transcript. The title of the certificate of completion will not. This series of courses is not eligible for federal financial aid unless taken as part of a degree program.

Two certificates

Courselist and requirements 2013-14

The certificate program in Interpersonal Neurobiology is available in two formats:

  • For-credit academic certificate of completion
  • Noncredit continuing education certificate of completion

Participants receive a Certificate of Completion in Interpersonal Neurobiology upon successful completion of the program. Participants must complete the Commitment Forms below in order to receive the Certificate of Completion.

This is a certificate program for professionals in mental health, education, early childhood, addictions, coaching, conflict resolution, leadership, healthcare and other human services disciplines. Most participants have a minimum of a master's degree from an accredited college or university.

All certificate recipients complete a final integrative project.

Academic Credit Certificate requirements

Twenty-two (22) credits are required for the program. Participants completing the academic certificate must maintain a 3.0 GPA average or better.

Noncredit Continuing Education Certificate requirements

Two hundred and twenty (220) contact hours are required for the program. You must attend all of the classes, complete all assignments, and participate fully in the online portions of the classes.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

Individual contact hour CEU certificates are issued at the conclusion of each class.

CEUs can be used toward Oregon and Washington counseling or social work continuing education requirements. Washington Clock Hours are available. They can also be appropriate for meeting psychology continuing education requirements.

The courses also meet the requirements for National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) continuing education credits.

Continuing Education Units from Portland State University are typically accepted in all states. Check with your licensing board or professional association to verify. If you encounter any difficulties, please contact sharpml@pdx.edu.

In several places you will note that continuing education credit is noted as hours and/or units. Typically you earn 6 hours for a one-day work shop. In Oregon, you need 40 hours every 2 years to renew your therapist license. If you convert those hours to ‘units’ (CEUs), the formula is 10 hours = 1.0 CEU, 6 hours = .6 CEU, or 40 hours = 4.0 CEU.
