PSU operates on a quarter-based schedule. A quarter credit is equal to two-thirds of a semester credit: if you need two semester credits, you will need to take three quarter credits; if you need four semester credits, you will need to take six quarter credits; and so on. Half-credits are not available at this time.
If you have any questions regarding whether specific classes will meet your particular licensure needs, please consult your licensing board; we cannot provide advising toward specific licensures, as requirements vary license to license and may change without notice to Portland State University at any time.

Many of our classes are cooperative classes, meaning credits are provided by PSU but the instruction is delivered through an approved third-party agency. This agency may be an education organization, such as Virtual Education Software Inc or Innovative Education, or it may be an instructor, such as Steven Zvolner or Catherine Jonsson. In all cases, course content has been reviewed and approved for credit hours toward teacher, counselor and school administrative licensure renewals.
For more information, please visit the Cooperative credit page.
Should you choose to audit a non-cooperative class, you:
- must create or have an active student account
- must pay full tuition; there is no discounted rate for auditing a class unless you are a senior citizen
- will not receive any undergraduate or graduate credit, clock hours, continuing education units, or professional development units
Audited classes will not apply toward licensure renewals, which require either credit, CEUs, or PDUs.
Registration, payment, student accounts and transcript requests for noncredit classes are handled entirely through the Continuing Education Course Catalog.
