Foundations for Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder
Understand the characteristics of children with autism spectrum disorders through diagnosis, eligibility, program planning and ongoing student evaluation across the lifespan. Understand the historical and legislative foundations, the latest etiology and educational research of how autism impacts child development and the importance of collaboration and cultural proficiency within the person-centered support team.
Evidence Based Practices in Autism Spectrum Disorder
This course overviews the development, procedures, and application of the evaluative methods for determining evidence-based practices in autism. Students will review the salient elements of IDEA as it relates to the use of effective education practices developed from scientifically based research. Students will explore various interventions supported by SBR. The course will also address implementation of evidence-based practices in the public school setting.
Collaborative Fundamentals of Support for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Mutually-respectful, strength-based relationships are fundamental to successful collaboration among team members who support students with autism spectrum disorders. Learn how your leadership style relates to how you interact with and impact others. Develop foundational collaborative skills including developing relationships, communicating, facilitating, mentoring, coaching, advocating, and practicing culturally-proficient ethics. Become an active listener with empathetic presence, resiliency and flexibility.
Life-Long Program Planning for Individuals on the Autism Spectrum
Understand the educational and life skill needs of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders including accommodations available through IEP and 504 processes, universal interventions, and planning and implementing ASD specific interventions. Identifying and planning for transition needs for school succession and adult life transitions in the context of lifelong goals. Planning for generalization and exploring current issues in Autism Spectrum Disorders and effective professional development practices and coaching.
