A spectrum of choices for the professional working with individuals with autism

All three programs provide a theoretical foundation of knowledge in autism. The methods learned will broaden your instructional repertoire. Although these programs do not lead to licensure, each enhances the knowledge and skills of professionals who are employed in public school and clinical settings.

Each certificate is designed to focus on a particular area of autism spectrum disorder, but coursework in all programs covers the understanding of autism, methods of teaching individuals with autism, special characteristics of high-functioning autism and Asperger’s Syndrome, and social competency and applied behavior analysis as well as learning theory, instructional leadership, and instructional technology and research.

Which program is best for you?

The Autism Spectrum Disorder Certificate provides advanced, specialized training for individuals who work with early childhood through high school students with autism spectrum disorders. The curriculum addresses the wide range of competencies that are necessary for the provision of effective educational programming for students who are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.

The Asperger’s Syndrome and High Functioning Autism Certificate, that is offered online, provides a framework for understanding how to improve the social, cognitive, behavioral and academic skills of students with Asperger’s Syndrome by teaching them to utilize appropriate social skills across a variety of contexts. This program focuses on how AS/HFA affects a student’s behavior, social interaction and learning skills and the specific techniques, strategies, and environmental modifications to enable children and young adults to succeed in general education, at home, and in the community. Topics include diagnostic issues, educational implications, transitioning through grade levels to college and succeeding in the work world. All courses in this program are offered in a fully online format.

    Past participants in the Autism Certificate

    The courses contained in this certificate are offered in summer term. The title of the certificate has been changed to Certificate of Completion in Curricula for Learners with Autism to reflect more accurately the focus of this program. Please contact the program manager for support in completing your current program plan or transitioning into one of the new programs.

    What is a Certificate of Completion?

    Certificates of Completion are awarded to all students who successfully complete a series of linked courses with a defined focus. The certificate distributed upon completion of the identified courses reflects the total number of credits earned (graduate or undergraduate). These certificates of completion have been approved by the appropriate department(s). The individual courses will appear on your PSU transcript. The title of the certificate of completion will not. This series of courses is not eligible for federal financial aid unless taken as part of a degree program.
