Undergraduate Admission

To receive an undergraduate degree from the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science (Maseeh College), students must first be admitted to both Portland State University and, at the appropriate time, to the specific degree program within a Maseeh College department.

Step 1: Admission to the University:
If you are a first-time student applying from high school, home school, with G.E.D. scores or with fewer than 30 college credit hours, please follow the Freshman Admission Instructions.

If you are a first-time student with 30 or more transferable quarter credits (20 semester credits), you will be considered a transfer student. Please follow the Transfer Student Admission Instructions.

If you are an international student who is not a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S., please follow the International Student Admission Instructions.

Step 2: Admission to a Major Department
Undergraduate students also must apply to the engineering department in which they plan to major. Generally, students apply to their major department in their last quarter of lower division studies.

Deadlines for applying to a degree program:

  • Fall Deadline June 15
  • Winter Deadline November 1
  • Spring Deadline February 1

What do I need to do my senior year of high school to prepare myself for college?
Staying focused and getting prepared are the keys to a successful senior year of high school. Getting involved with your college career early will help you transition from high school to college. Do high school credits count toward graduation?
Where appropriate, high school students are encouraged to prepare for Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and College Level Exam Program (CLEP) exams. Rigorous preparation enhances university preparedness and affords students an opportunity to obtain college credit. Review Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and College Level Exam Program details to see how students who perform college-level work prior to college are eligible for possible college credit after admission to Portland State. Graduate Admission

Graduate students must apply to the university and to the appropriate engineering or computer science department. Please follow the admission process below.

Step 1: Admission to the University

If you are an international student who is not a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S., please follow the International Student Admission Instructions.

Step 2: Admission to a Major Department
Graduate students must also apply to the appropriate department. Please follow the application process below.

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE):

  • CEE Departmental Application
  • Three Departmental Evaluation Forms or Letters of Recommendation (these must come directly from your references)
  • One official transcript, in its unopened envelope, from each post-secondary institution attended. (Including PSU transcripts)

Department of Computer Science (CS):

  • CS Departmental Application (pdf)
  • Official reports of your Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores. The general examination is required; the subject area exam in CS or any other area is encouraged.
  • Two letters of reference, preferably from people who know your academic performance and potential. Letters from work supervisors are less useful but also acceptable.
  • Unofficial transcript from each post-secondary institution you have attended. (Not required for international students.)
  • A short personal statement describing your background in CS, including any relevant work experience, your primary interests in CS, and your reasons for seeking a master's degree. Please indicate whether you plan to work toward the degree part-time or full-time; if part-time, describe your other employment or major activities.
  • If you are applying for an assistantship, include a statement about your teaching and/or research experience.

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE):

  • The ECE Departmental Application
  • Unofficial transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended (including PSU). English translation of transcripts is required from international students.
  • Three letters of reference sent directly from the authors in stamped, sealed envelopes.
  • Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores for M.S. and Ph.D. applicants.
  • Applicant questionnaire.

Department of Engineering and Technology Management (ETM):

  • The ETM Departmental Application
  • Three letters of reference.
  • A background statement.
  • A goals and objectives statement.
  • One official transcript, in its unopened envelope, from each post-secondary institution attended. (Including PSU transcripts)
  • Current (within the last two years) GRE scores (required for Ph.D. applicants, optional for master's applicants). Minimum sum of 1100 for verbal and quantitative or verbal and analytical is required for Ph.D. applicants.
  • International Students: current (within the last two years) TOEFL score report sent directly to the ETM department from Educational Testing Services (ETS). Required minimum scores: 550 for master's program, 575 for Ph.D. program.
