Compressed Work Week Program

"The Compressed Work Week has made it easy for me to complete my degree while working full time and maintain a family life too. The program is rigorous and sets a very high standard for students and faculty. This allows me to take what I learn with me to work the next day." - David Arbow, CWW student and Intel employee

INTRODUCTION:

PSU's Compressed Work Week (CWW) program is specifically designed for working professionals seeking to advance their careers by completing an undergraduate degree. The CWW program is a partnership with Portland Community College (PCC).

The CWW program makes it easy for students to obtain an ABET accredited BS degree in electrical engineering or computer engineering..

CWW classes typically meet Monday and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, or Saturday. In Washington County, classes are offered at PCC Rock Creek and at the CAPITAL Center.

Students successfully completing a BS degree may apply for admission to Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science graduate programs.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS:

Traditional general education and engineering courses taken from an accredited college may be used to satisfy some degree requirements. Speak with a PSU advisor to develop an individual course plan. For appointments, call (503) 725-4631 or email advisor@cecs.pdx.edu.

1. Electrical Engineering: For a detailed description of the Electrical Engineering BS program at PSU, please see the ECE Undergraduate Handbook. For a graphic representation of the courses required for a BSEE, see the EE Blue Sheet.

2. Computer Engineering: For a detailed description of the Computer Engineering BS program at PSU please see the ECE Undergraduate Handbook. For a graphic representation of all the courses required for a BSCmPe, see the CmPe Blue Sheet.

COURSE TRANSFER POLICIES:

1. Calculus and other math classes from an accredited institution usually transfer directly, if credits match. The PSU Math Department is the final authority on math course transfers.

2. Calculus-based physics classes from an accredited institution transfer directly. The PSU Physics Department is the final authority on math course transfers.

3. General education classes may be used in place of the PSU university studies courses. Specific rules may be found in the PSU Bulletin, or speak with a PSU advisor. Advising appointments can be made by through the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science Student Services Support Center by calling (503) 725-4631, or email info@cecs.pdx.edu

4. Technician program courses do not transfer directly into ABET accredited engineering or computer science programs such as those at PSU.

If you think you have learned the material for a particular math, physics, or engineering class, you may try a "credit by exam" option for the class. This costs $40 per class and the process is explained in the ECE Undergraduate Handbook.

FINDING YOUR STARTING POINT:

1. Evaluate your math level. Because engineering classes extensively use algebra, trigonometry and calculus, it is important you are up to speed in these areas. In addition to reviewing your transcripts, we suggest you review math books for these subjects to help find your starting level. You should start with a math class in which you are comfortable, even if it is to some extent a review of previous material. This way you may be successful and build a solid base for the following classes.

2. Evaluate your physics and chemistry courses. Evaluate your physics courses to determine if you have had the three required calculus-based physics classes. If not, you should plan on taking these courses after you have learned or refreshed at least some of the basic calculus. Likewise, evaluate any chemistry courses, if required for your program.

3. Make a list of the general education courses. Make a list of the General Education courses you have taken such as writing, speech, technical writing, psychology, philosophy and others.

4. Speak with an engineering or computer science advisor.

ENGINEERING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE ADVISING:

To develop a custom degree path that best takes advantage of your previous courses, fits your home and work responsibilities, and schedules classes in the best order, we recommend you obtain individual advising. To arrange an individual advising appointment, call the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science at 503-725-4631 or email advisor@cecs.pdx.edu.

PORTLAND COMMUNITY COLLEGE NON-DEGREE STUDENT ADMISSIONS AND REGISTRATION FOR CWW:

The PCC admission form for non-degree students is available on the Web.

From this site, you may access an online admission form and submit it directly online.

For faster service, print a hard copy of the form and take it directly to the PCC Rock Creek Admissions Office in Building 5 of the PCC Campus at 17705 NW Springville Road, Portland, OR 97229. (Springville is a right turn off of 185th about one mile north of Sunset Highway.)

Once you have been admitted to PCC, you must gain permission to enroll in mathematics, physics, or chemistry classes. If you took math classes more than three years ago or took them more recently but received grades lower than a C, PCC requires that you take the ASSET Math Placement Test.

If you need to take the ASSET, please call 503-614-7300 to determine when the test is offered.

Once you have been admitted as a non-degree student, go to http://www.pcc.edu/nst/credit.htm and read the details for the PCC registration process. You may register in person at the Rock Creek campus, on the Web, or by touchtone phone.

  • Our surveys have shown that a large number of new CWW students plan to start taking classes in the fall. Along with math and science classes, we offer beginning ECE and CS classes in the fall to get people started. In later terms, these students combined with the students who have already successfully completed these classes should give a large enough cohort of students to support the more advanced ECE and CS classes that will be offered then. We are very committed to the CWW programs. Therefore, we attempt to strategically schedule class offerings so that once a student starts a program, the classes will be available for he/she to finish the program. Note that PCC will continue offering CWW compatible math and science classes as long as these classes have sufficient enrollment.

  • At this point, we are offering classes only in Washington County because the majority of the CWW students work there.

  • The PCC classes are at the Rock Creek Campus, 17705 N.W. Springville Road. Map and other information on the web at http://www.pcc.edu.

  • Classes identified as WCWFTC take place at the Washington County Workforce Training Center in the CAPITAL Center at 185th and Walker Road.
