Student Leaders for Service
Start the school year right! Join us for the Viking Day of Service!
At the beginning of every academic year, Student Leaders for Service adds a day of service to the Viking Days Portfolio. Portland State is nationally known for its focus on community-based learning, and we believe it only fitting to start the year off by engaging in the larger Portland Metro community. Viking Days of Service also serves as a community building activity for new and returning students who are interested in civic engagement.
Participants register beforehand, and food and transportation is provided. Students, faculty and staff can choose from a selection of projects with various community organizations. We seek to provide a fun and engaging day of service that gets people thinking about how to include community involvement as a commitment throughout the upcoming academic school year.

Student Leaders for Service is rooted in PSU's commitment to community outreach and engagement. SLS provides students with opportunities to significantly address issues in the surrounding communities while simultaneously preparing future civic leaders.
Through SLS, 20 students make a commitment to serve 10 hours a week during the academic year at a local organization where they provide direct service to address community needs. Currently, SLS serves as an entry point for community-based organizations to partner with the University and provides resources and opportunities for students interested in community engagement. Partners and students create year-long student leadership work plans. Specific plans vary depending on student interests and community organizational needs, but all students act as liaisons between the community organization and PSU.
Student Leaders for Service Wins Global Citizenship Award
The MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship recognizes exceptional student civic engagement initiatives from Talloires Network member universities around the world.
