National Resources for Civic Engagement

American Association for Higher Education - AAHE is a membership organization that serves its members, other individuals, communities, and institutions in the higher education community by building their capacity as learners and leaders and increasing their effectiveness in a complex, interconnected world. The AAHE Service Learning Project consists of a two-part initiative dedicated to the integration of service-learning across the disciplines.

American Democracy Project - The American Democracy Project is a multi-campus initiative that seeks to create an intellectual and experiential understanding of civic engagement for undergraduates enrolled at institutions that are members of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). The goal of the project is to produce graduates who understand and are committed to engaging in meaningful actions as citizens in a democracy.

Campus Compact - Campus Compact is a national coalition of more than 900 college and university presidents committed to the civic purposes of higher education. To support this civic mission, Campus Compact promotes community service that develops students' citizenship skills and values, encourages partnerships between campuses and communities, and assists faculty who seek to integrate public and community engagement into their teaching and research.

Center for Civic Education - The mission of the Center for Civic Education is to promote an enlightened and responsible citizenry committed to democratic principles and actively engaged in the practice of democracy in the United States and other countries.

Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) - CIRCLE promotes research on the civic and political engagement of Americans between the ages of 15 and 25. Although CIRCLE conducts and funds research, not practice, the projects that CIRCLE supports have practical implications for those who work to increase young people's engagement in politics and civic life. CIRCLE is also a clearinghouse for relevant information and scholarship.

Corporation for National and Community Service - The Corporation’s mission is to provide opportunities for Americans of all ages and backgrounds to engage in service that addresses the nation’s educational, public safety, environmental, and other human needs to achieve direct and demonstrable results and to encourage all Americans to engage in such service. In doing so, the Corporation will foster civic responsibility, strengthen the ties that bind us together as a people, and provide educational opportunity for those who make a substantial commitment to service.

Educators for Community Engagement - Educators for Community Engagement is a national organization dedicated to service learning. Faculty, staff, community partners, and students work towards the common goal of increasing the practice of service-learning across the United States. Members actively explore teaching and learning through community service and participate in learning circles and meetings that allow them to learn from other innovators and practitioners in the field.

Learn and Serve America - Learn and Serve America provides grants to schools, colleges, and nonprofit groups to support efforts to engage students in community service linked to academic achievement and the development of civic skills. This type of learning improves communities while preparing young people for a lifetime of responsible citizenship. In addition to providing grants, Learn and Serve America serves as a resource on service and service-learning to teachers, faculty members, schools, and community groups.

National Service-Learning Clearninghouse - The National Service-Learning Clearinghouse (NSLC) supports the service-learning community in higher education, K-12 education, community-based initiatives and tribal programs, as well as all others interested in strengthening schools and communities using service-learning techniques and methodologies. The NSLC website contains a vast library of service-learning resources, including best pracitces, course syllabi, print publication, a calender of national events, and more.

National Service-Learning Exchange - The National Service-Learning Exchange supports high quality service-learning programs in schools, colleges and universities, and community organizations. The Exchange operates five centers with knowledgeable staff who can provide information to support service-learning efforts and/or link service-learning practicioners with a peer mentor to provide further one-on-one assistance.
