ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK 2012

Apply Today!

We'll meet in Portland and travel to Seattle/Tacoma, WA, San Francisco, CA, northern California, or stay here in the Rose City, dedicating our week of spring break to building homes, serving meals, and or helping out on an organic farm. This year, Student Leaders for Service is coordinating four trips for our Alternative Spring Break program starting March 24, 2012.

  • SAN FRANCISCO, CA  *FULL*

Travel with us to San Francisco, CA to work with different organizations that are fighting to support two large populations of San Francisco: people living with HIV/AIDS, and people who are homeless and hungry. If you have an interest in working with under served populations in major urban areas, this is the perfect spring break trip for you. You will learn what specifically different people in San Francisco are doing to combat issues close to their hearts. On our off day, we will explore San Francisco and all of the treasures that it has to offer!

  • JUNCTION CITY, CA *FULL*

A group of twelve lucky students will be spending their spring break with us in scenic northern California, at a little place called Canyon Creek Lodge.  We expect to spend our time there working on various projects, including gardening, light construction, cleaning, and landscaping work.  Canyon Creek is surrounded by natural beauty and is located near a swimming hole, mountain hiking trail, and a Buddhist meditation center.  If you need to detoxify yourself from the city, and are interested in doing some hands-on, physical, earthy, creative type work, then this is the trip for you!  Our hosts will have some basic accommodations available to us, but part of the group will likely be ‘roughing it’ a bit, sleeping outside in tents.

  • SEATTLE/TACOMA, WA *SPACE AVAILABLE*

Join us on this trip and partner with Habitat for Humanity to take action in the construction of affordable housing. We will be heading to the Tacoma/Seattle area where we will get our hands dirty helping to fulfill the essential human need of having a roof over our heads. On our off day, we will take advantage of the surrounding beauty and take a side trip to Seattle where we can reflect and celebrate a week’s worth of meaningful work.

Stay here in Portland and join us for one day or all five on a variety of projects around the city.

Applications for Seattle/Tacoma are still being accepted.  Unfortunately we are no longer accepting applications for the San Francisco and Canyon Creek Lodge trips.
Registration for Portland projects will open in February.
