How Food Retailers Can Leverage Digital Influence

In this session you’ll see how more than 22,000 grocery customers are already using email, texts, smartphones, social media, and the retailer’s website as an integral part of their grocery shopping. You’ll also learn six steps food retailers can take to build competitive advantage and drive same store sales.

Consumers Take Over The Industry’s Reins
The changing economy and corresponding behavior of consumers has given shoppers a significant amount of power in the food industry, over manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers. Meanwhile, so-called “alternative” food retailers have chipped away at traditional food retailers, making it more difficult for them to succeed. And food inflation has been tempered for a number of reasons, making growth in food retailing even more difficult. This presentation will delve into what has happened and its impact on a $1.2 trillion industry.

GMOs/What the Heck?
The debate over genetically modified organisms in food, and whether their presence in food should be labeled, continues unabated. Usually with passion. Often with misinformation. And not always with any great level of civility. But for 30 minutes at PSU's executive conference, we're going to try to rectify that - with an accessible, reasoned and hopefully reasonable discussion of the issue, and try to figure out if there is a middle, common ground upon which both sides of the issue can agree. Join Bruce Silverman, Whole Foods and Joe Gilliam, Northwest Grocery Association.
