PSU Social Innovation Incubator adds Central City Concern, The Tipping Bucket

(Portland, Ore.) June 14, 2010 — The Social Innovation Incubator (SII) at Portland State University’s School of Business Administration had added two new members: Portland-based Central City Concern (CCC) and Utah-based The Tipping Bucket.

The Social Innovation Incubator works to catalyze entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial initiatives that have high potential to mitigate social and environmental problems. Founded in 2010, SII provides tailored business strategy advising, MBA consulting teams, and access to investors and experts for its members.

“We are very excited to round out our portfolio with these exciting organizations,” says Cindy Cooper, Social Innovation Incubator director. “They represent diverse approaches to social issues and are breaking new ground for social good and our collective well-being.”

Central City Concern (CCC) is a Portland non-profit working to end homelessness by addressing its root causes—addiction, mental health issues and poverty. It helps people achieve personal transformations and permanent self-sufficiency every day, providing primary/mental health care, addiction treatment, affordable housing and employment development. CCC will work with the SII and PSU’s Business Project Program to develop a social enterprise that simultaneously creates jobs for individuals, many who were formerly homeless and in recovery, while making CCC’s Community Volunteer Corps program financially sustainable.

The Tipping Bucket is a crowd-funding platform that uses social media and social networks (Facebook, Twitter, iPhone apps) to fund social good. Each project is a “bucket” and has a limited time to rally individual donors to its cause. The Tipping Bucket’s promise, “Change the World, or Your Money Back” means that donors will get their money back if a project fails to reach its goal and “tip” in time. The Tipping Bucket’s core philosophy is “philanthropy for all.”

Current SII members include Preciva, a medical device technology start-up, and Sustainable Harvest, a specialty coffee importer just named to Bloomberg Businessweek’s “Most Promising Social Entrepreneurs.”

The Social Innovation Incubator’s (SII) mission is to catalyze economic, social and environmental prosperity through entrepreneurial action, and works in partnership with Portland State University’s Center for Global Leadership in Sustainability, PSU’s Entrepreneurship Center and the Portland State Business Accelerator.
