Portland State University is offering free tai chi classes to the general public Mondays and Wednesdays in public spaces downtown.
The idea is to promote Chinese culture, said Meiru Liu, co-director of the Confucius Institute at PSU, while offering low-key exercise for those who need a break from work or study.
Tai chi involves slow, steady motions. The martial art promotes balance in the body and gently stretches muscles, said Mingqiang Gao, the other co-director. Some of the movements mimic animals, such as cranes or grasshoppers, he said.
The university will offer free tai chi classes Mondays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in front of the PSU library, and Wednesdays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in Pioneer Courthouse Square. Everyone is welcome, and attendees can stop by at any time during the hour.
