I write to advise you that this academic year, PSU will not close between the Christmas and New Year’s holidays as we have done in past years. Instead, we will treat this traditionally slow period at the university as an opportunity to do some clean-up and readiness work going into a new calendar year. In addition, we encourage those who are interested and able to take advantage of this slower-paced period to take vacation time as each individual employee deems appropriate.
By way of context, you may recall that we identified two goals in closing during the holidays: to save money through reduced services and energy consumption, and to give our SEIU employees a convenient time to take their furlough days.
As it turned out, so many employees sought and received permission to work during the holiday closure last year that PSU did not achieve substantial savings from the closure. In addition, the current proposals in SEIU bargaining indicate our SEIU employees will not have furlough days to use. For these reasons, we have decided not to close.
We recognize that reduced numbers of students and staff in December present security concerns for those who do work between Christmas and New Year. Accordingly, access to University facilities during this period will be limited to individuals with current and valid University identification and will be primarily through electronic access control.
