Research Projects

Portland State's Black Studies Department has a distinguished faculty who specialize in various fields from psychology to history to urban development. Areas of specialization do not only range in subject matter, but in their regional focus as well. The Black Studies Department covers areas of African, Caribbean and African-American issues.

Each course the department offers seeks to enlighten students to their allowed capacity within the 10 week term. The subject matter of each course is coupled with a faculty or adjunct professor who is well-versed and invaluably informative. Often times one may hear non-majors say that Black Studies courses should be required for all students to take as a means to open up a dialogue around issues of racial discrimination and oppression. This reaction is a result of countless hours of volunteer service and research in a community-based setting by our faculty, who truly love what they do and live to do it, both on and off campus.

The diverse range of focus of each faculty and staff member in the Black Studies Department leads to a diverse range in research and community service. Take a look at what we're working on here in the department.
