Profile: Meet Professor Horia Boboia

"As a teacher I am not merely interested in transferring knowledge to my students but in creating a forum for the understanding and the construction of knowledge where students and teacher become equally responsible for a process in which they can all grow together."

Horia Boboia was born in Bucharest, Romania. In 1977 he arrived in The United States as a political refugee and later became an American citizen. He continued his art education and received his BFA (1983) and MFA (1985) in painting from California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles, CA. Among others, he studied with professors: John Baldessari, Robin Winters, Douglas Huebler, Bill Viola, Georg Baselitz. Primarily a painter, he is also involved with photography, film and video and music. His work was shown in galleries in Europe and United States. He lived at times in Vienna, Los Angeles, New York, Berlin, Tel-Aviv. He moved to Portland in 1995 and teaches painting at PSU since 1999.
