A monthly program featuring lectures on art, architecture, gardens and historical culture of China and East Asia, highlighting connections with the Pacific NW.

Presenter: Ms. Maihwa Frances Li
Topic: Distilling the Essence of Chinese Poetic (Literati) Gardens.
Learn about the design elements of Chinese classical gardens and how they reflect layers of meanings reflecting Chinese thought, culture and refinement.
Painter and educator, Maihwa Frances Li was born in Shanghai, China, grew up in Taipei, Taiwan, has resided in Missouri and New York and now calls Portland, Oregon home. Trained in both traditional Chinese-style and Western-style painting, Ms. Li, has taught in upstate New York and regularly teaches Chinese brush paiting in Portland. She is also a regular volunteer with the Portland LanSu Chinese Garden, the Portland Japanese Garden, and the Portland Art Museum.

Topic: Folklore, Asian American Identity, and Cultural Heritage
What is folklore? Who are the folk? How can folklore be essential to Asian American Identity? Why is cultural heritage widely talked about nowadays? What intangible cultural heritage is being transformed cross-culturally in the USA and why is cultural sustainability becoming a hot topic? This presentation will attempt to answer these questions by linking those ideas to our own everyday practices.
